A very comprehensive book about the life of Khayyam the Poet, Philosopher, Mathematician, Astronomer and Astrologer. Foreword by Rt. Hon. Sir Akbar Hydar; signed (printed) and dated 1 January 1941. Sir Akbar pays tribute to the author, Mr V.M. Datar, 'now Swami Govinda Tirtha and always a mystic.' As well as a lengthy bibliography and introduction, there are planetary calculations and tables - followed by the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam in Persian; with an English translation. Ten listed full page b/w photographs; the first two of which (contemporary dignitaries) have tissue guards. Morocco leather binding (with maroon spine) - see main photo. Condition: in a generally sound condition. The boards are a little faded and/or marked in places with some rubbing/bending at the corners. Only a small triangular portion of the book's paper title label remains towards the head of the spine. Internally, the pages are mildly to moderately tanned with occasional spotting; more evident on the preliminary and final ones. Where there is tanning, it tends to be located more at the page margins with the result that both text and images remain generally clean and crisp. FFEP has an ink inscription (I hope you will be able to understand some of this book… and is dated 15 May 1943, India) and also a portion of it cut away in the bottom right-hand corner. pp. CC, 402/8vo (royal octavo).
