First Edition/ First State. Small octavo. Hardback. True first edition / first state of the British Birds sub-series (Ornithology Volume IX of the complete library). Undated as issued in 1838. Title page features the original publishing triumvirate of Lizars, Highley, and Curry. Text block is textually complete (pp. 17–315, preceded by portrait, vignette title, main title, and 5 pages of contents). Lacks Plate 23 (Ash Harrier) opposite page 234. Contains 33 of the 34 called-for hand-coloured plates, plus the monochrome portrait frontispiece of Sir Robert Sibbald and the falconry vignette title page. Plates are bright with original first-state character, featuring only the avian subjects hand-coloured against uncoloured monochrome backgrounds. Bound in contemporary half dark blue/black leather over marbled boards. Spine features five raised bands with somewhat faded gilt titles; boards and all edges show rubbing, but remain attractive. Internally, the binding is starting to crack slightly at page 208/opposite plate, but the overall structure remains tight, square, and solid. Pages and plates are in very good, clean condition overall, showing only a few small spots of light foxing, minor toning, and occasional light handling marks to the margins. A very presentable copy of a scarce first state.…
