Item description from seller

Printed for A. Millar, 1756 (although misdated 1856 on the title page). The scarce first edition, complete with all 17 plates including the often missing sheep plate (here bound in opposite page 32). Large quarto volume with wide margins. vii + 266 pages with an unnumbered index and errata sheet at the rear. Good or better. Period calf ruled and lettered in gilt. Front hinge splitting, although still held by ties, and front free endpaper loose. Internally generally clean, although with some spotting towards the rear. Russell was a doctor at the English factory in Aleppo between 1740 and 1753. This book covers his observations not just on the natural history (including the first description of the Syrian hamster) but life in the city.
