A very scarce copy of the first translated edition of Ruggieri's narrative of the attempted self-crucifixion of Matthew Lovat. Very scarce. First English translation. From the original narration of Cesar Ruggieri, Professor of Surgery at Venice in a letter to a medical friend. An account of the 1805 attempt of an Italian shoemaker named Mattio Lovat to crucify himself outside the third-floor window of his home in Venice. He had previously attempted a similar act in 1803, and on both occasions was rescued by passers-by. Venetian physician Cesare Ruggieri came to see Lovat out of curiosity but treated and observed him at his bedside until he had physically recovered. Ruggieri's diagnosis of a persistent mental disorder meant that Lovat was transferred to San Servolo, an early mental asylum. The original paper pamphlet. Externally, smart with light wear and the odd small mark to the external pages. Splits in the paper along the spine. Internally, firmly bound.
