delights in the unexpected, though this is not always evident from a
cursory inspection of his subject matter. `Flaming Bodies', for example,
although set in the offices of a computer programmer analysing data for a
film company, involves theatrical bombshells such as a car flying in
through the top floor of a skyscraper, and a refrigerator turning into a
spaceship.
Mercedes Mordecai has been fires from her job but continues to haunt the
office. What happens in the bulk of the play is her dream. She falls asleep
and we follow her into her dream life. She is alone. But the end to the
character's solitude must happen in order for progress to be made. A car
comes through the window of the thirty-second floor. That such unusual
flights of imagination can be woven so carefully into the fabric of the
play as to become positively essential to the drama is further proof that
Snoo Wilson is a master of intricate plotting and dramatic
prestidigitation.
`The Number of the Beast' lends itself immediately to the lure of mysticism
and magic, since its main character is the black magician (some might say
charlatan) Aleister Crowley. His group of acolytes live out their days at
his commune in Sicily, awaiting imminent expulsion by the police. At the
first sign of trouble, Crowley flees to France where we subsequently find
him in a kind of magic contest with a lady hotelier who may or may not have
been Jack the Ripper.

into the interior of consciousness ended in highly fantastical
destinations. `The Number of the Beast' does not set out to show him up as
a charlatan or a dangerous seducer, rather as an intellectual that was
`less responsibly inclined'.
