Item description from seller

676p. Ex-library; REBOUND. A hardcover book that has been rebound in imitation leather. Spine barely faded. Library stamps on endpapers and title page. All pages age-toned. A page has been torn out between pages 196-197, but the text itself is complete and continuous (it might have been a plate or an insert). Otherwise clean and tight. Good, sturdy reading condition. Volume 100 of THE NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, the first literary journal published in the United States. Contains the issues for January and April 1865 (including the semi-centenary appendix). Some notable features include a review of the novel EMILY CHESTER by Anne Moncure Crane, who was noted for writing about women's sexuality; a review of Tennyson's ENOCH ARDEN; an essay on the life and works of the Brothers Grimm, with special attention given to Jacob; an essay on the attitude of the early Christians toward slavery; an essay on the philosophy of Herbert Spencer; an editorial on Lincoln's plan for Reconstruction, in response to his address to Congress on Feb. 10 and his Second Inaugural Address; and a review of the novel AZARIAN by Harriet Prescott Spofford.
