First printing (per matching dates upon title and copyright pages and single-line statement upon latter). xvi, 425, [1], [4] pages. Hardcover: H 21.5cm x L 15.75cm. Lacks dust jacket. Red cloth rubbed, light color fading and some soiling to spine cloth, short tears and slight fraying at spine ends, some dulling/flaking to spine's gilt stamping but still legible, front board's gilt stamping still bright. Gilt top edge; light toning to fore-edge and bottom edge. Light staining along margins of page 1 with occasional light foxing spots to other leaves; interior pages overall remain quite clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy. Features dark brown endpapers, color frontispiece with captioned tissue guard plus 25 color plates on unpaged leaves (also with captioned tissue guards), 98 b/w plates, Preface, Introduction, and four pages of publisher's ads at rear. Uncommon book by art historian and critic John Charles Van Dyke (1856-1932) and magnificent streetscape and cityscape illustrations by artist Joseph Pennell.
