NEW HOMES IN THE WEST, written by Catherine Stewart and first published in 1843, is an extreme example of the latter point of view." The West in this case refers primarily to Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin, and secondarily to Tennessee and Missouri. or what we would refer to today as the midwest. Many of the author's commentaries are in the form of letters addressed to a friend in Buffalo, New York.
