London: Chapman & Hall, 1865. 2 vols. 8vo, xi, [1], 320; vii, [1], 309, [1] pp. with 40 illustrations by Marcus Stone. Advertisement for the People's Pickwick on smaller blue sheet after list of illustrations in vol 2., no other ads. Half morocco, backstrips gilt with green morocco labels. Backstrips worn at crowns and feet, vol 2. rehinged and with new papers, scattered foxing especially to plates but generally clean. § First edition in book form of Dickens's last completed novel, "Our Mutual Friend had a mixed reception (the young Henry James's harshly dismissive review in The Nation is notorious) but its stock has risen dramatically in recent years and it is now generally regarded as one of his very greatest works" (ODNB). Smith I, 15., with all flaws noted by him.
