About this Item
Signed by Mohammed Zia-ul-Haq, who was president of Pakistan from 1978-1988. ul Haq was a former military officer who in 1977 led a coup that overthrew the democratically elected government. He was the 6th president of Pakistan. Ul Haq was a dictator, but he was supported by the US administration at the time, which looked on his government as an ally. American legislators and officials made many trips to Pakistan during his administration. The book was a presentation copy; ul Haq signed and inscribed the book to the late governor and senator of the state of Washington, Daniel J. Evans. Evans received this book during his term as senator (1983-1989). Since US officials made many trips to Pakistan during ul Haq's administration, it's probable that Evans received the book on an official trip. Ul Haq's photographic portrait is at the front of the book; he died in a plane crash in August 1988 (which also killed the US ambassador to Pakistan), just a few months after this book was signed. It was later determined that the crash was a result of sabotage. (Source: Wikipedia). The book itself is very uncommon on the market even without the signature. It is a heavy, thick volume is a comprehensive book that covers the Muslim East (Indonesia, Brunei, etc.); the Muslim Middle East (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, UAE, Oman, etc.); Muslim North Africa (Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, etc); Muslim Sub-Saharan Africa (Chad, Niger, Mali, Nigeria, Gabon, etc); and Muslims of Europe and America. Profusely illustrated - color photographic illustrations and maps, maps on endpapers. Thick hardcover, 9x12 inches, original dust jacket, 628 pages. Very good plus condition, firmly bound, not price-clipped.
