Non-fiction travel memoir of a 2006 overland journey through southern Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and western China. Encounters with residents combine local history with accounts of everyday life after communism. Visits to former Soviet labor camps in Kazakhstan introduce communities still shaped by forced deportation. Conversations reveal Soviet nostalgia, ethnic loyalties, and conflicting desires for personal freedom and strong leadership. Historical background and firsthand observation offer armchair travelers a detailed introduction to Eurasian borderlands and the people who inhabit them. Taxi drivers, local guides, political activists, and fellow passengers give the journey its human detail. Their conversations range from memories of Soviet repression to resentment of the West and hopes for a better life. Young nightclub patrons in Urumqi offer a different perspective, concerned with music, drinking, and romance. Tayler reflects on a recurring contradiction: people who resent repression and corruption may still admire rulers they associate with national strength and restored pride.…

More and more, they are challenging theWest.
Media reports focus on developments in Moscow and Beijing, but the peoples inhabiting the vast expanses in between remain mostly unseen and unheard, their daily lives and aspirations scarcely better known to us now than they were in ColdWar days.Tayler finds, among many others, a dissident Cossack advocating mass beheadings, a Muslim in Kashgar calling on the United States to bomb Beijing, and Chinese youths in Urumqi desiring nothing more than sex, booze, and rock ’n’ roll—all while confronting over and over again the contradiction of people who value liberty and the free market but idealize tyrants who oppose both.
From the steppes of southern Russia to the conflict-ridden Caucasus Mountains to the deserts of central Asia and northern China,Tayler shows that our maps have gone blank at the worst possible time.
