Item description from seller

First Edition. Original crimson cloth. Inscribed and signed in ink by Howells: "Charles Fairchild/ from/ W. D. Howells." Fairchild was a broker and friend and neighbor when Howells lived at Belmont. See "Selected Letters of W. D. Howells" for the relations between Howells and Fairchild. Fairchild owned and rented Howells' home in Belmont, and he conducted negotiations for publication of Howells' works by Harper when Osgood failed. Note that this book is published by Harper. From the library of Christoph Lohmann, who was Associate Editor of "Selected Letters of W. D. Howells," but without any indication to that effect.Wear with slight loss at the head and foot of the spine, fading on the spine, internals very nice. An important association copy.
