Add to basketDublin and London: Maunsel & Co., Ltd., 1915. Editor, poet, playwright, and participant in the Howth gun-running, Figgis (1882-1925) was pro-Treaty during the Irish Civil War. "Dapper Darrell Figgis, the dandy of the War of Independence, was at the centre of great events in the formation of the State but was written out of the official history of the time because he didn't die for the cause, but killed himself. Having endured his wife's suicide and the tragic death of his lover following a backstreet abortion, his life was mired in scandal, sexual and otherwise." [Irish Independent]. Whatever the judgement of his life and politics, he certainly was familiar with prison. Arrested in 1916, and again in 1917, Quercus counts Castelbar, Stafford, Reading, Gloucester, Lincoln, and Durham. This is a Fine copy of the First Edition. Not common. Drak gray paper-covered boards with a velum spine; titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; viii, 116 pages, with a four-page publisher catalog in the rear. Poetic dedication to AE. The dustwrapper is complete; the spine is slightly darkened with hints only of wear to the edges. In an archival plastic protector. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
