First edition, first printing, of this attractive map with numerous inset plans and extensive lists of hospitals, rest houses, police stations, and telegraph offices. We have traced eight copies in institutional collections, with none located in the UK. The growth of Malaya's road network was intertwined with the expansion of British political and economic activity in the region. Roads opened up the rubber plantations of the western states (as readily apparent here in the network of main roads snaking along the coast), consolidated communications between different administrative centres, and catered to a thriving community of expatriate car owners. By 1930, the region had almost 5,000 miles of roads, while the number of motoring licenses issued between 1910 and 1930 increased by 1,500 percent. High resolution photographs are available on request. Linen-backed colour map, 12 miles to an inch (990 x 680 mm), folding away into green silk-covered boards (255 x 155 mm), front cover with title sheet lettered in blue laid down. Map bright, light toning along some folds, horizontal creasing where sometime carelessly refolded, boards sunned and a little worn. A near-fine copy. Seller Inventory # 163457
