Item description from seller

A pristine 'Gift Edition' compilation of the verse of Edgar A. Guest, known in the 1920s as the 'People's Poet.' This edition is distinguished by its remarkable condition, enclosed in the original decorative two-piece box, and features elaborate Arts & Crafts style page borders intended to elevate the homespun poetry into a dedicated art object. Key Features: +++ Visuals: Designed with a three-color Art Nouveau floral border (yellow, green, purple) on every page. The cover and box lid feature matching floral paste-down illustrations. +++ Binding: Bound in publisher's original paper-covered boards with cloth spine, housed in the original matching cardboard gift box. +++ Content: A thematic collection of approximately 12 poems celebrating the domestic ideal, including The Mother Watch, Unchangeable Mother, and The Mother on the Sidewalk. Condition: Fine -- The book appears unread with no flaws or blemishes; the binding is tight and the pages are bright. The box is graded Near Fine; it shows only modest, even age-toning consistent with 100-year-old paper, but remains structurally sound with no splits, crushing, or corner wear. A rare survivor in this condition. Box 6.875 inches tall / 30 pages. Historical Significance: Edgar A. Guest was the quintessential voice of early 20th-century American sentimentalism. His syndicated verses appeared in hundreds of newspapers, celebrating family, home, and hard work. While critics often dismissed his work as 'cracker-barrel philosophy,' his popularity was immense, and he became the only poet ever awarded the title 'Poet Laureate of Michigan.' This 'Gift Edition' represents a specific publishing strategy of the Roaring Twenties: repackaging popular newspaper verse into high-quality, thematic tokens of affection. While Guest's books were printed in vast numbers, the survival of the fragile cardboard presentation boxintended to be discarded after the gift was receivedis uncommon. This set serves as a material example of 1920s domestic culture and the commercialization of Mother's Day sentiment.…
