About this Item
Collector's Edition, Two Volumes. Bound in full burgundy leather, spines in four compartments separated by three raised bands, gilt lettering and decoration in all compartments and covers, a.e.g., silk bookmarks bound in, moire silk endpapers, acid free archival paper, Smyth sewing and concealed muslin joints to ensure the highest quality binding. First printed by William Caxton, now modernised, as to spelling and punctuation, by A. W. Pollard. Illustrated by Robert Gibbings with color frontispiece and B&W plates. Le Morte d'Arthur was completed by Malory in the ninth year of the reign of Edward the IV (between March 4, 1469 and March 4, 1470) and first published by Caxton in 1485. It is the last important English book written before the introduction of printing with movable type, and because no manuscript copy of the work has survived, it is also the first major English work for which we are entirely dependent on a printed text. . Both volumes are in perfect, pristine condition, still in their original shrink-wrap. AS NEW. Color and B&W drawings. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 347; 410 pp. Seller Inventory # 7617
