Item description from seller

4to, pp xxii complete with the 48 plates, including 2 fine chromolithographs (in colour) and 46 monochrome plates, the first ten retaining their original tissue guards. Publisher's original binding of dark blue/black buckram spine with crisp gilt titles, over dark blue cloth boards. Minimal shelfwear to extremities; boards straight and tight. A very good, sturdy, and entirely unrestored copy. An exceptional copy internally. All pages and plates are in excellent, clean, bright, and unblemished condition. Notably free from the foxing or thumb-soiling typical of natural history atlases of this era. Crucially, this is a non-institutional copy with absolutely no library stamps, perforation marks, or pocket remnants. Published just a decade after the okapi (Okapia johnstoni) was first introduced to Western science by Sir Harry Johnston in 1901, this monumental work represents one of the earliest and most definitive visual studies of the elusive "African Unicorn." Sir E. Ray Lankester, the director of the Natural History Museum, originally intended to publish a massive descriptive text volume alongside these plates. However, intense scientific competition from European rivals pushed him to rush this definitive atlas into print first. Scarce in this condition.…
