About this Item
2 vols. 1st Belgian edition. 16mo. Half-leather, marbled boards. 4 raised bands, gilt titles on burgundy labels, marbled edges. 278 pp. 322 pp. First published in Paris in a larger format,1835.##### A dark comedy, quite popular in its time. The protagonist, Edmond d'Offlize, boasts that he can seduce a very rich heiress whose face is so ugly that it would be acceptable "only in the land of the frogs." A great muddle of ardor and manners ensues. The Marquis de Custine (1790-1857) was a French aristocrat. His father and grandfather sympathized with the French Revolution but were both guillotined. Custine's mother was imprisoned and barely escaped the same fate. Although happily married, Custine lived openly in Paris with his English lover Edward Saint-Barbe. Aloys, another of his novels deals explicitly with homosexuality long before such subjects were common to discuss openly. ##### Condition: Good; surface wear to boards; moderate wear to extremities. Corners and spine ends lightly rubbed, some discoloration. Text block is very good; clean and tight with only occasional foxing. Residue of removed bookplates on fep; prior owner s inked signature in each volume. Very presentable. Seller Inventory # k200801b

If you're dissatisfied with your purchase (Incorrect Book/Not as Described/Damaged) or if the order wasn't delivered, you're eligible for a refund within 30 days of the estimated delivery date. We will refund those too, but in that case, we would like you to contact us ...
More InformationShipping costs are based on an average weight, including packaging, of 2 LB, or 0.9 KG. We usually don't charge extra if you are above that, but If your book is very heavy or special handling is required we may add an extra shipping charge. This usually occurs only for books being shipped via priority mail or internationally; the extra cost for shipping can make the difference in whether we make a profit or take a loss on the sale. We will always contact you first to get your approval for the extra charge. Sometimes shipping doesn't cost as much as we estimate -- if it's a negligible amount we just let it be but if it is substantial, we usually refund the excess shipping. We do not insure our shipments*; if you would like your package insured let us know and we will quote you the extra cost for doing so. (*Domestic items being sent by priority mail are automatically insured by the post office for up to $50.)
