From the Author
It took about four years of research and interviews (with more than 50 former White Sox and Yankees) to put together a book that I believe brings back to life a period when the Yankees ruled the American League and the Sox were the perennial runners-up. The story is essentially told through the eyes of the participants, year by year (1951, the first year of the Go-Go Sox, thru '64, the final year of the Yankee dynasty) and series by series and is illustrated by several pages of photographs, most from the dusty files of the newspaper for which I labor, the Chicago Tribune. The book's theme is the home run power of the Yankees, exemplified by Mickey Mantle, against the speed and dash of the Sox, personified by the Cuban Comet, Orestes ``Minnie'' Minoso. For each of the 14 seasons covered, there are two highlighted games, a particularly tough White Sox defeat and an especially thrilling Chicago triumph. Another section of the book is devoted to the players' reminiscences of the rivalry, and another contains brief capsules of each of the 292 games played between the teams in the 14 years, with score, crowd, winning and losing pitchers and summaries. This is the second book I've written on the White Sox... My next one, which revisits the 1959 White Sox and tells the story of Chicago's last pennant winner, comes out in 1999, published by Sagamore.
