The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The page edges are clean. The book is square. The spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm scrolling through them without finding any instances of soiling. I'm not finding any creasing. There are no markings. There is a tiny bookseller label at the bottom of the front inside cover. It's 'The World's Greatest Bookshop', Foyles, at Charing Cross Road in London. There are no other attachments to be found anywhere in the book. The label is in very good shape, both white inside covers and end papers are very clean. There is no writing of any kind in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's very clean. The spine has lightened from red to orange. There are no tears on the jacket. The flaps are somewhat toned. They are in very good shape, a tiny crease or two. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'The strong community ties of mining villages are the central concern of this book which deals with the social history and sociology of mining in County Durham in the twentieth century. Focusing on the County as a whole, it asks what is sociologically most distinctive about the area in the past and how it is changing in the present. The personal documents presented in the first chapters of the book bring to life the local mining community with an evocative picture of village life at the turn-of-the-century; a description of the work of Peter Lee, the county's most important political leader, and even a consideration of the social significance of leek growing and leek showing. These first-hand accounts are integrated with the results of social research carried out at Durham University over a number of years; four areas are looked at in detail. First there is a study of the general characteristics of mining villages and towns in County Durham and the question of why they are called 'communities'. This is followed by a look at the unique aspects of local politics in the area-- the County Council has been continuously controlled by the Labour Party for over fifty years. Town and village planning is examined from the point of view of the decline in mining, the creation of new towns and the controversial village categorization policy. Finally, the book discusses changes in mining employment and the question of ex-miners working in the new manufacturing industry.'.…

Store description
Many of the books I will be selling can accurately be described as ranging from somewhat rare to very rare. In some cases there won't be another copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. There doesn't seem much point, for you or me, in offering something that so many others are already offering. Subject matter will range very widely, creating the possibility for people with very different interests to find something that excites them. As regards pricing, my primary goal is to sell the book. Most often I would expect my book to be the least expensive option on the Internet taking into account an appropriate comparison(what is the condition, is the dust jacket present, is the book signed, is it a first printing, etc.). More important than selling the book I want to make sure that you know, as much as is possible, exactly what you are getting. To that end, you'll notice that my descriptions of condition tend to be lengthy, and that there will always be photographs to help you draw your own conclusions. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about a given book. As regards international shipping, the first class or standard rates I charge are based on a package weight between 2 and 3 pounds. If the book is on the thin side there is a possibility that I can securely pack it up under 2 pounds in weight. If so, the shipping price will drop by around $11.00 or $12.00 to $26.00-27.00. Canada, which is less expensive drops to $18.00. You can contact me before purchasing a book for an estimate on the shipping cost. If you buy the book and it weighs in below 2 pounds you'll get a Reduced Shipping message and amount with the invoice and you'll see the lowered final cost before you make your payment.…
