Six vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. title slips, orig. stitching. [China]: Man-Ri wenhua xiehui ??????, [1936]. First edition of this collectanea (congshu ??) on texts from Liaodong from the end of the Ming and early Qing period. Our book was compiled by Luo Zhenyu ??? (1866-1940), a prominent scholar who contributed much to Ming-Qing history in the field s early days. The collection, with a Preface by Luo, was published by the Manchu-Japanese Culture Association (Man-Ri wenhua xiehui). This society had been created by the Japanese Southern Manchuria railway corporation as the Manchu-Mongol Culture Association in 1921 in an attempt to win hearts and minds of the region for stronger ties to Japan. The publication of our collection of sources on the period of the Manchus rise to dominance in China by the association is an indication of the kinds of cultural activities in which the association engaged.
