The 10 photomicrographs illustrate: (1) human blood cells; (2) frog blood cells; (3) bones in a six-month embryo; (4) cross-section of the epiphysis of the tibia in a six-month embryo; (5) blood vessels in the frog's skin; (6) fat embolism of the glomeruli and the afferent vessels of the human kidney; (7) secondary liver cancer; (8) multiple aneurysms in the walls of small arteries; (9) chronic interstitial inflammation of the female breast with cyst formation; (10) advanced cysts in the same patient as in (9). NOTE: I have included photos of three of the ten photos (nos. 6, 7, 9). I can supply photos of the other seven photos, upon request. "Von Recklinghausen was not only a great experimental pathologist and authority on pathological anatomy: he was also a gifted technologist who introduces several technical procedures and instruments. He was one of the first to use a metallic impregnation method in the preparation of tissue for microscopy. As early as 1862 he described the use of a weak solution of silver impregnation method for the staining of nervous tissue. During his investigation of inflammation of the cornea and of the motility of cell he invented a form of moist chamber. Von Recklinghausen was also interested in the development of blood cells, and extensively studied the morphology and staining reactions of leucocytes. He was one of several investigators who drew attention to the amoeboid movement of leucocytes in the bloodstream, and in 1885 published a paper which extended and supported Huber's work on the relationship of chloroma and leukaemia."
