Text block with top edge gilt. 16 monochrome photomicrographic plates with captioned tissue guards at rear; photomicrographic plate with tissue guard as frontispiece; many additional illustrations (mostly in the text, a few full-page). Boards with scattered small spots; edgeworn; corners bumped; ends of spine crushed, fraying at tail; spine slightly faded. Endpapers toned; contemporary ownership inscription and bookseller's pencil annotations on front endpaper. Pages almost entirely clean. All plates present; a few tissue guards with marginal tears. Gutters cracked in a few places.
