With Illustrations by Howard Willard. 8vo., viii,(2),337pp. Beige colored buckram, spine printed in dark red. Map endpapers. No dust jacket. Black and white illustrations in text. George Todd Downing was a Native American writer born of Choctaw heritage in Atoka, Indian Territory in 1902. He became Oklahoma's first successful writer of detective novels. 'The Mexican Earth' is his only non-fiction work and was written after extensive excursions in Mexico. Written in first person prose, The Mexican Earth offers an in depth cultural, historical, and personal context of it's folk religions, daily customs, and history from the Aztec civilization and Spanish conquest to the Empire of Maximilian and the Mexican Revolution. The book expressively narrates the experience from the perspective of a writer who identified with the native Indios and indigenous point of view. Binding and pages are clean and tight. Ex libris bookplate of original owner inside. Minor edge wear and foxing to cover. Overall very good condition.
