Add to basketGroner, Augusta. Mene Tekel: A Tale of Strange Happenings. Translated from the German by Grace Isabel Colbron. New York: Duffield & Company, 1912. First edition in English. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 1-243 [244: blank]. Original red decorative cloth, front panel stamped in white and blind, spine panel stamped in white. Bookplate of noted collector Bill Hopkins on front paste-down. Previous owner's dated signature on front free endpaper. The white stamping (always vulnerable) has almost entirely perished, binding a bit shelf-leaned, generally a good to very good copy. #1848. $45. "Detective and adventure story with archaeological and technical material . This would have been a better book if the author had not yielded so much to melodramatic situation, for her work is otherwise capable." -- Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 958. The story makes use of such motifs as underground settings, secret writing, impersonations, and hypnosis. The title is a reference to the Biblical tale related in the Book of Daniel in which words appear mysteriously on a wall at the palace of Belshazzar. The characters are in some archaic form of Hebrew that cannot be deciphered until Daniel is summoned. He pronounces the writing as "mene mene tekel upharsin," meaning roughly "counted, counted, weighed, divided," the gist of which is a prophetic warning that Belshazzar's kingdom is doomed, to be divided by its neighbors. "A native of Vienna, Augusta Groner created the detective Joseph Muller, whom contemporary reviewers compared favorably to Sherlock Holmes. In this novel he plays a subordinate role to the Swedish scientific genius, Professor Clusius, who has discovered an unexplained method of recapturing photographically the persons and events which have impressed themselves in the past on a given surface. He attempts to help his friend, Lord Tannemore, an archaeologist, prove that certain Babylonian and Assyrian artifacts in the British Museum are forgeries." -- Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 374. Reginald 06421. For reference to German original see Bloch 1270.
