Add to basketFrom his earliest days Mendelssohn was for ever making social contacts, and it is not surprising that the story of his life has often been told, that many have written reminiscences of his personality, and that his music, though much of it is inadequantely known at the moment, is still for the most part accessible. This book can therefore make no claim to be a work of original scholarship or research; it aims rather at presenting a clear view of Mendelssohn's life and works, coloured neither by the exaggerated hero-worship by which they were at first surrounded nor by the equally exaggerated denigration that followed. We can see more easily now the curiously uneven quality of his output, and distinguish between the works that merely reflect the social background against which they were written, and those that glow with an individual imagination; similarly his personality can be seen now as something more complex and contradictory than was often imagined. It is hoped that this book may at least fill others with the curiosity to pursue these investigations further. Illustrated. Browning to end papers.(We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).
