Jacket toned and rubbed to spine, with light chipping and closed tears to top edge and two minor tape burns to rear cover. Very good. A long poem originally written on Shetland immediately after Joyce's death in 1941. Its publication was prevented for nearly fifteen years, first by the death of publisher Jack Kahane, and subsequently by the wartime shortages of paper and increased costs of printing and binding. A number of other long poems are printed here as well, building on MacDiarmid's aim to break away from English parochialism and tap into the World Soul of literature, which he associated so much with the work of Joyce. From the library of pioneering Sports Scientist Prof. N.C. Craig Sharp (1933-2018), also a Burns scholar and Poetry Critic for Radio Clyde.
