No dust jacket as issued. 1869 Binding: leather spine (with 4 raised bands) and 1/6 leather and black cloth boards which have leather triangles at all corners. Binding is original. Leather is scuffed at hinges, spine and at bumped corners. Four-inch strips of paper have been added to the front and rear inner hinges (gutters) for reinforcement. Pages have barely detectable sunning with occasional small spots. Twelve pages have faint patterned stains. (I have tried to provide a complete and accurate description of the book's condition. The seller's photos should provide assurance that this is quite an attractive book). Illustrations include a portrait of Admiral Semmes, two full-page portraits of Confederate Navy personnel, and 5 full-page beautifully colored chromo-tints featuring ships in action. 833 pages. Admiral Semmes, as an admiral in the Confederate Navy was considered the most successful commerce raider in maritime history. His book, written and published just four years after the close of the Civil War, provides a lengthy and vivid account of naval action throughout the conflict. This primary source volume should be of special interest to academics and Civil War buffs as an example of post-war efforts by Confederate veterans to justify their actions. Semmes is credited with popularizing the phrase "War Between the States". Semmes was charged with treason in 1865, but the charges were subsequently dropped.
