Item description from seller

First editions in English of three works relating to the infamous Diamond Necklace Affair, authored by the mastermind of the monumental fraud which severely undermined the French monarchy on the eve of the Revolution. The principal work is signed by the author on page 261, as issued. At the centre of the scandal was Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy (1756–1791), the self-proclaimed "Comtesse de la Motte", although in fact she and her husband were of doubtful lineage. Using forged correspondence, in 1784 she began to deceive Cardinal de Rohan into purchasing an astronomically expensive necklace under the pretence that it was for Queen Marie Antoinette. La Motte then dismantled the piece, selling the gems on the black market. While the exact details of the conspiracy remain murky, the affair significantly undermined confidence in the ancien régime. La Motte was imprisoned in 1786, but escaped months later and fled to England, where she used the press to plead her innocence. Together with her Memoirs, here are bound An Address to the Public, which exposes the various unsuccessful attempts by French royal authorities to suppress her writings, and A Detection, or, A Scourge for Calonne, attacking the exiled former Controller-General of Finance. ESTC T142432; T111143; N52894. 3 works bound in one vol., octavo in half sheets (215 x 125 mm), pp. iii-viii, 231 [i.e. 261], [3], 48; [2], 45, [1]; 119, [1]. First work bound without half-title. Contemporary half calf, smooth spine divided by gilt fillets, red morocco spine label, marbled sides. Engraved armorial bookplate of the Dowdeswell family of Buchley Park, Worcestershire, on front pastedown. Extremities worn, front joint restored, faint tidemark to corner of book block, contemporary annotations to title pages, 75 mm closed tear with old paper repair. A very good copy.…
