Item description from seller

Conceived as a result of rivalry between two Victorian turf clubs, the Melbourne Cup has become part of Australia's social history. Such is its fame, it is commonly referred to simply as 'The Cup'. Mark Twain said of it: "Nowhere in my travels have I encountered a festival of the people that has such a magnetic appeal to a whole nation. The Cup astonishes me." While the status of the race is now of international proportions and the winning purse is measured in millions, its fundamental intrigue has not changed since Archer earned 710 euros for the initial running in 1861. That is, the Cup is till a two-mile Handicap, making it an anachronism in the elite world of Group 1 races, where weight-for-age conditions and distances of 2000m prevail. The race has a fascinating history involving spivs and sportsmen; raconteurs and rogues; 'smokies' and 'sure things'; toffs and tiffs; scandal and secrecy; fashion and folklore. It's all here in this latest edition of the Cup chronicles, first published by Mauriece Cavanough and updated by Rhett Kirkwood and Brian Meldrum from where he left off in 1982. Like the race itself, this is a book which will appeal to the aficionados as well as the once a year followers of the turf.
