In this influential reinterpretation of medieval technological history, historian Jean Gimpel argues that Europe experienced an early form of industrial revolution centuries before the better-known transformation of the nineteenth century. Drawing on archival research and engineering history, Gimpel explores innovations in agriculture, mining, metallurgy, architecture, and mechanical engineering that reshaped medieval society. The book examines the development of water-powered machinery, large-scale mining operations, advances in construction technology, and the rise of sophisticated mechanical clocks - technologies that laid foundations for later industrial growth. The study also highlights the role of medieval architect-engineers such as Villard de Honnecourt and the technological sophistication behind cathedral construction and urban industry. Richly illustrated with diagrams, manuscript images, and architectural examples, the work remains one of the most accessible and thought-provoking explorations of medieval innovation and economic development. His works - including The Cathedral Builders and The Medieval Machine - helped reshape modern understanding of medieval engineering, industry, and scientific development.…
