"The subject of the present volume is a series of rock-cut tombs lying to the north of the Sphinx, and occupying the northern cliff face bounding the rocky amphitheatre in which that great monument of the Old Kingdom lies. With them are published some of the small monuments found in the same vicinity." (Preface).
