Item description from seller

First edition. Frontispiece illustration of the author at work. Small octavo. 455pp., plus 15pp. ads at the rear for a revised edition of the author's book *The Market* (with 15 pages of reviews from the press). Green cloth with blindstamped boards and gilt spine lettering. Loose title page with library stamp (though NO other markings in book), lacking tissue guard and likely one end paper (between the title and preface), corners frayed, tear at the crown and toning on the spine, good only. An uncommon complimentary volume to De Voe's early masterwork, *The Market*. This volume is focused on detailed (and sometimes exhaustive) descriptions of various types of meat, fish and game, as well as agricultural products sold in the major markets of the Northeast. Each entry includes ways in which the food can be prepared and how they taste, along with numerous accompanying anecdote gathered during his research. A compelling volume despite its compromised condition.
