Fine internally, clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show short cosmetic (closed) nicks around the edges. Issued without a dust jacket. -- An exhibition catalogue for the first major retrospective of Mark Rothko's work held in Moscow. The book documents a landmark cultural event that brought the American Abstract Expressionist's masterpieces to the city of his ancestral roots. Exhibition & Content: The catalogue reflects the 2010 exhibition curated by Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst, which featured over a dozen major paintings on loan from the Mark Rothko Family Collections. The "Unknown World": The title refers to the period between 1949 and 1969 when Rothko moved away from surrealism into his signature "multiforms" and large-scale colour field paintings. Key Works: It includes high-quality reproductions of iconic works, such as Untitled (Yellow, Orange, Yellow, Light Orange) (1955) and the somber Black on Grey series from his final year. Essays & Analysis: The text features contributions from prominent art historians, including Irving Sandler, who situates Rothko within the New York School, and personal reflections from the artist's children, Christopher Rothko and Kate Rothko Prizel. Scholarly & Cultural Significance: - A "Homecoming": Though born in Dvinsk (then part of the Russian Empire, now Latvia), Rothko had never been the subject of a large-scale solo show in Russia until this Garage exhibition. -- Contents: Preface / Darya Zhukova, pp 6-7; Mark Rothko: A View from Russia / Prof. Andrei Tolstoy, pp 10-23; Mark Rothko's Painting: Tranquility Tinged with Terror / Irving Sandler, pp 26-39; Plates, pp 42-67; Chronology, pp 72-89; Colophon.…
