Item description from seller

Published by Victor Gollancz in 1954. A First edition. J. I. M. Stewart was a successful writer of detective fiction writing under the pseudonym of Michael Innes. This, his first 'straight' novel, written under his real name, is described as "half a love story, half a chase (not for man, woman or child) and half a lot of other things - against the background now of Oxford and now of Florence". Hardcover. Brown cloth boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Distinctive yellow, red and black Victor Gollancz style cover. Size: 19 13 cms or 7 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches. Page number: 222. Condition of book and jacket: Very Good. The boards are clean and scarcely rubbed. The top edge of the endblock is slightly dusty. There are a few spots of foxing on the endblock and a few on the pages within. The pages are otherwise fresh, clean and unthumbed. The binding is secure. The spine of the jacket, the top edge and the creases have darkened. There are some pieces of loss and a closed tear at the edges. It is otherwise quite clean and still fresh.
