The first edition of this Stanford map dates from 1878, as public interest in the area was high as the British were involved in the Afghan war. It went through numerous editions throughout the First World War. The 1923 edition is particularly interesting in that it includes the European breakup of the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of the Middle East. The Turkish war of Independence ended in 1922, the Republic of Turkey was established in October 1923, Britain granted full independence to Afghanistan in 1919 and Turkestan was being absorbed into the new Soviet Union. Constantinople is still the named capital of Turkey; it was changed to Istanbul in 1930. This edition of the map is a snapshot of the East as it was being redrawn. Note French Syria. Other features include steamship routes and distances in nautical miles, railways and submarine telegraphs. The exact publication date is 2nd November 1923. OCLC: 49987036 3 copies. 42 x 28", that folds to 7 x 4 3/4" with 36 map sections linen backed and housed in a green linen folder with a title label on front cover; advertisements for other maps in the series on the inside cover and the verso of the top sheet. Covers dusty, map in fine condition.…
