About this Item
83pp, blue cloth with black titles inside yellow labels on spine and front board. Cloth is faded and shows foxing on both boards and spine. Splits and fraying to top and bottom spine ends. However, binding is tight and spine is straight. Age toning to front and back endpapers. Contents of book show none of the foxing or toning evident to the covers and endpapers. The pages are clean and bright, unmarked. Hirschfeld's 36 illustrations are bright and vivid, and they're immediately identifable for his signature style. The plates themselves are suitable for framing. Vanity Fair article from June 1934 laid in, entitled "Gentlemen of the Bar," documenting the city's best-known bartenders and their favorite drinks. Hirschfeld's first book. He went on to wide acclaim for his caricatures of theatrical figures across the latter half of of the 20th century. This volume is a contemporaneous look at New York's speakeasies a year before Prohibition officially came to an end in 1933. Included in the list of bars and its accompanying drawing is the Stonewall on Seventh Ave. South in Greenwich Village, NY. In 1934 the bar relocated to its present location on Christopher St. This was the site of the Stonewall rebellion in 1969. Seller Inventory # 028671
