Octavo. 256 pp. First English edition. As issued, in publisher's boards with dust jacket. Slight toning to the binding; contents have very faint and even toning throughout; previous owner bookplate of David Szwyczyk, bookseller and Latin American scholar, on the front pastedown; dust jacket is rubbed at the edges, particularly the back panel where this is a long closed tear; sticker of the America distributor, Lawrence Verry of Mystic, CT, on the spine; dust jacket is price clipped. Roa Bastos is an internationally acclaimed Paraguayan fiction writer, and this, his first novel, originally published as Hijo de Hombre (1960), was award-winning-both the novel and the screenplay adaptation by him. The first English translation is remarkably uncommon in commerce.
