A complete set of George Brandes ambitious work describing the Main Currents in Nineteenth Century Literature. A first edition of this translated work, complete in six volumes. A complete set of this ambitious work by influential Danish literary scholar, George Brandes. A first edition of this English translation, with 7 plates to volume VI, collated and complete. From the 1870s through the turn of the 20th century, Brandes was a motor force behind the modernisation of Scandinavian and European literature and is often cited as the trigger of the 'Modern Breakthrough', where authors began to rebel against Romanticism and traditional themes, and formulate a new naturalism and realism. The first four volumes of the collection stem from a series of lectures entitled Main Currents in Nineteenth Century Literature that Brandes delivered in 1871. Brandes seeks to sketch out a psychology of Europe in the first half of the 19th century by studying the main groups and movements in German, French, and English literature. Written in a lucid and enthusiastic style, the collection was voted as one of the top 100 books for education by philosopher William James Durant. All volumes have bookplate of prior owner 'Oliver Brett' to front pastedown. Half calf binding over red boards. Externally smart with minor some shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the occasional spot or pencil marking, except in volumes II and V where pages are a little more foxed. Very Good Indeed. Seller Inventory # 845N15
