Clarence Davies Collection, Museum of the City of New York. "Machines and Morality: The 1850s is the second in a retrospective series, commissioned by Dun & Bradstreet Companies, Inc., and published by a distinguished subsidiary, Thomas Y. Crowell Company, Inc., that focuses on the significant socioeconomic events and trends of past decades and their effect on business. The first book in the series, Conquest and Conscience: the 1840s, also written by Dr. Robert Sobel, was published a year ago. The richness of America's historical landscape is itself justification for renewed exploration. Yet the significant purpose of this series is to delineate the decade-by-decade progression of American business -- within the broader framework of social and political events, combining to shape a proud though occasionally flawed heritage. Although we are often told that history does not repeat itself, the frequent remarkable parallels between past and present tempt us to believe otherwise. History, to be sure, cannot repeat itself, just as no moment, nor any other measure of time can pass more than once. However, the nation's past mistakes can be repeated; its successes can be redoubled; and in times of crisis, its spirit can be revitalized. And as history recounts the greatness and failings of our forbears, it can -- it should -- afford a better understanding of ourselves, and our own capabilities. In the current era, the decade of the 1970s, American business is greatly concerned with reaffirming its place in society, and reassessing its responsibilities to society. Business is frequently held accountable for the nation's ills, although the cause and effect relationships are often obscure. Yet management must face the present challenges put to it. In these endeavors, Dun & Bradstreet is hopeful that some insight will be gained from these historical presentations of business in society. -- Hamilton B. Mitchell, Chairman of the Board and CEO, from the Foreword.
