First edition. 8vo. 40 pp. Two folding frontispiece maps: "S.W. Pass of the Mississippi" and "Coast Survey Chart Passes of the Mississippi." Eads (1820-1887) planned and headed the construction of the great bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis; "hardly had this work been completed (1874) when Eads proposed to Congress to open one of the mouths of the Mississippi River in the Gulf and maintain the channel," (DAB) a task successfully completed in 1879. Caption title: "Jetty System Explained." Thompson 2518. Original printed blue wrappers; the Franklin Institute copy with its stamps, ink accession numbers and a bookplate, noting "Presented to the F. Institute by J. B. Eads 10/24/76." Two chips in wrappers (not affecting text), else very good.
