Hardcover. Condition: Good. First edition (no additional printings listed; title not listed in publisher's ad) . Original quarter blue cloth (spine) and paste down paper covered pictorial boards, 9 x 11 1/2 inches, nonpaginated, illustrated with color drawings. Hardcover. Good, no dustjacket. Upper, side and lower edges of both boards lined with black cloth tape, a bit of light soil, some hairline closed cracks under paste-down. Internally, last free rear endpaper creased, two approximately 3/4 inch tears on lower edge there, smudges on side edges of some leaves, flipped through, just starting to lightly age yellow along edges, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked, with colors sharp and bright. First edition. 4to. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. FIRST EDITION of Justin C. Gruelle's Mother Goose. ".The figures are not manikins; they speak; they body emotion; they move; they show forth that intangible but very real quality which the artist dismisses with the single word 'character'. We predict for Mr. Gruelle great things in the future, for he seems to be of that gracious company who keep the love of childhood in their heart" (contemporary review). Justin Gruelle never achieved the fame of his older brother, Raggedy Ann and Andy creator Johnny Gruelle, but his Mother Goose remains a charming artifact from the Depression-era United States. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Justin C. Gruelle (1889-1978) was son of noted landscape painter Richard B. Gruelle, and brother of Johnny Gruelle, was a popular illustrator and creator of the Raggedy Ann books. Justin studied art with his father from an early age, and moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League. After 1910 he settled in Connecticut and wrote and illustrated several children's books, most notably A Mother Goose Parade. Unusually well-preserved copy, in broken pictorial box (top and bottom intact, sides unattached or missing). Two small spots of abrasion upper left corner front cover (where it appears dried school glue was flecked off evidenced by narrow stain strip, which is a pity, as otherwise new (by dint of broken box).
