Item description from seller

A unique "Graingerised" copy of the First Edition in a bespoke half leather binding with loosely inserted ALS dated August 1906 from a Sheffield holiday maker writing from Staithes (The queerest place I ever saw) "if you read about Staithes in White's "Month in Yorkshire" it will give a first rate notion of it" etc etc. The letter headed The Royal George Inn is addressed to Dear Mother & Father and signed Rodgers. It mentions stops at Whitby, Runswick,(where they stayed at the Sheffield Hotel -now The Runswick Bay Hotel) Robin Hoods Bay, Sandsend,Stockton. One wonders what he made of White's account of Sheffield " A detestable town" Originally issued as a text only work, this copy has been re-bound with marbled edges and endpapers five folding maps of local regions, five colour prints from paintings and 3 black & white from photographs. Its author Walter White (1811-1893) was a prominent self-taught Victorian travel writer, essayist, and distinguished librarian. Whilst he made his public name as a walker and writer, his primary career was with the Royal Society in London serving as its clerk and was later appointed Assistant Secretary and Librarian, a prestigious position that put him in contact with the leading scientific minds of the Victorian era, including Michael Faraday. He pioneered a genre of travel writing focused on regional, home-grown exploration rather than exotic foreign trips. He had a keen ear for linguistics and actively integrated phonetic local dialects and real conversations with ordinary people into his books His personal diaries were posthumously published in 1898 as The Journals of Walter White.…
