First impression of the first UK edition. Catalogue date '3.'99' (as called for) to first page of publisher's catalogue to rear. (The first US edition was published by E. P. Dutton, New York, 1898). ***Very good in tan cloth-covered beveled-edged boards with black titles and gilt and colour decoration to spine and red and black titles and gilt and colour decoration to front board. Ten back and white illustrations including tissue-guarded frontispiece showing: 'Jack is captured', as called for. Decorative front and rear free endpapers. Contemporaneous owner's name in black fountain pen ink to recto of frontispiece: 'William P. Priestley, Norton Disney.' Contemporaneous, pink 'Cassell' paper bookmark loosely inserted to the fore which has small chip to top edge. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine rubbed, creased and nicked. Very light surface scratch to bottom of rear board. Spine tight. Pages clean. 314 pages plus publisher's sixteen-page selection of titles to rear. 186 mm x 130 mm. Very hard to find first impression of the UK first edition in its original decorative binding in nice collectable condition.
