William Claflin was the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1869-1872, opposed the expansion of slavery, helped found the Free Soil Party in Massachusetts, active in the founding of the state Republican Party, promoted women's suffrage, and established the state's first Board of Public Health.
