About this Item
No date, circa 1939. 17×24cm; [30]pp. Paperback booklet of colour postcard views. Brown card covers with gilt title and mounted colour image in gilt frame. Photographer/publisher's device in blind on back cover. Light general wear, binding still secure. Fifteen photochrom images mounted on blue paper with red titles and borders under glassine paper; all still bright, unfaded. A 'Very Good' copy. Interesting collection of images made by Paul Bender at the start of the twentieth century. He seems to have mainly produced images for postcards using photochrom, or the Aäc process, invented in Switzerland by Hans Jakob Schmid during the 1880s. Schmid worked for the company Orell Gessner Füssli, with which Bender also seems to have had an association. These are colour lithographic prints made from black and white photographs; and since the original monochrome image was manipulated and split across multiple stones (one for each colour), the result is often reminiscent of photomontage.
