All volumes are clean and bright within. Bright UK first edition set of J. R. R. Tolkien's (1892-1973) epic masterpiece, each volume issued in later impressions by publisher George Allen & Unwin Ltd. Originally published between July 1954 and October 1955 (The Fellowship of the Ring, July 1954; The Two Towers, November 1954; and The Return of the King, October 1955), Tolkien's heroic romance (as he preferred to identify his work) would grow to become one of the most beloved works of the twentieth century. Following the publication of The Hobbit in 1937, this epic trilogy was originally meant as a sequel to be issued in one volume (with The Silmarillion to accompany it as a two-volume set) but, for economic and publication reasons, was first issued in three separate volumes throughout 1954 and 1955. The works, which are set in the Third Age of Middle-earth, tell the enduring tale of a band of reluctant heroes who set out to rescue their world from the grips of evil, and which masterfully combine Tolkien's gift for storytelling with his extensive knowledge of folklore, philosophy, and philology. Considered by many to be the first great work of "high fantasy," The Lord of the Rings redefined the fantasy genera and is now recognized as among the greatest literary achievements of the twentieth century. Tolkien's epic is also among the most prized by book collectors around the world. This set assembles all three volumes in later impressions (see above) published in the years 1965 and 1966. Each is remarkably bright, clean, and well-preserved-and the dust jacket to each volume is not price-clipped. First Editions, Later Impressions (15, 12, 11). Seller Inventory # 3270
