About this Item
Stated First Edition. The condition of this book and dust jacket, published in 1938, is pretty astounding. If all books were as well taken care of. Take a look at the photos of the maroon covers. They appear to be perfectly clean. The corners and edges have no rubbing, no wear. The gilt on the spine is very bright. The top page edge is a slightly lighter purple. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. All three page edges are clean. The book is square, the spine is not slanted. I think I can say that there is no wear at all on the covers, maybe the tiniest bit of crinkling at the spine ends. There is a square inlaid illustration on the front. It too is in excellent shape. So let's move on to the interior: it too looks terrific too. I'm scrolling through the pages without finding any instances of soiling. I'm not going to turn over each and every one of the 310 pages but half a dozen scrollings through is usually pretty conclusive. The inside covers and end papers are also perfectly clean. I'm not seeing any creasing on any of the pages, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. It is a marvel of fine condition and it was published in 1938. You can see the dust jacket (pretty good, to start, that there is a dust jacket) in the first few photos. It looks perfectly clean. It has almost no wear at all. There is a tiny scuff off the top edge of the front cover just adjacent to the spine (first photo) and an even tinier one at the bottom edge of the spine (see second photo). I don't believe there are any tears. I have had the jacket in a protective cover for as long as I've owned the book, which goes back a number of years. The flaps are very clean. The previous owner did neatly clip all four corners. The clip at the top corner of the front flap is larger, likely in order to take out the price. If you collect the author, you are not going to find a book and jacket in finer condition. From the dust jacket 'Few writers can create an eighteenth-century romance more gracefully than Jefferey Farnol; no one has a surer gift for cloaking characters and romance without robbing them of conviction and reality. The Lonely Road is in the best Farnol tradition-- a stirring stand-and-deliver tale of flight and fisticuffs, of swords that sparkle in the moonlight, of ambushes and rescues-- and chiefly of Jason Wayne, Jacobite and fugitive, with a price on his head and a lovely, headstrong maiden on his hands. The famous author of The Broad Highway and The Amateur Gentleman has given us a sturdy, full-blooded romance, played against the background of the glamorous past.' Farnol, along with Georgette Heyer, largely initiated the Regency romantic genre. Seller Inventory # 003194
