Item description from seller

The first edition of this very scarce work on mid-19th century London, from the House of Commons to the 'Rag Fair'. A very scarce work rebound in a cloth binding. Library bookplate to the front paste down. Ink inscriptions to the verso of the title page. James Ewing Ritchie (1820-1898) was an English journalist and writer of travel books and political biographies. Seven of his books were about nineteenth-century London, including this one. In this work, he explores the traditions of the House of Lords and House of Commons, the pleasures of Vauxhall Gardens and the 'Penny Gaff', the plight of the coal-whippers, the services of St. Paul's Cathedral, and many more fascinating aspects of life in London in the mid-19th century. Throughout he adopts a confiding tone, offering opinions on various aspects of London at this time. Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned with the odd spot and handling mark. Very Good.
