Item description from seller

First edition, first issue (Logik), bound with a first collected edition (Sammlung). Logik is Kant's major post-Critical work of formal logic; the Sammlung reprints several scarce works from Kant's early period. Logik was published at Kant's request and edited by his former student, Gottlob Benjamin Jäsche, from Kant's post-1765 lecture notes. As part of his professorial duties at the University of Königsberg, Kant lectured on logic from 1765 to the end of his academic career in the 1790s. Despite the fundamental significance of logic for Kant's critical philosophy of the 1780s, he had only published one previous work on formal logic, in 1762. For the Cambridge Kantian Lexicon, the Jäsche Logik is "a reasonably accurate record of Kant's views on logic and its philosophy throughout the Critical period and up to the end of his career" (p. 707). This copy contains the comma after Nicolovius on the title page, which Warda identifies as the first issue. However, it lacks the errata leaf that Warda calls for - presumably, this was discarded when the work was bound. The Sammlung reprints five of Kant's early writings published from 1758 to 1768. The register and pagination is continuous. The five texts, all in the original German and listed here in the English translations given by Cambridge University Press, include: a) A New Doctrine of Motion and Rest and the Conclusions associated with it in the fundamental principles of Natural Science (1758). A scientific work in which Kant outlines his conception of mechanical principles. b) Thoughts on the Premature Death of Mr. Johann Friedrich von Funk (1760). An open letter to the mother of a favourite student of Kant, reflecting on the fragility of life. c) Essay on the Maladies of the Head (1764). A reflection on mental illness, drawing on contemporary examples in Kant's Königsberg. d) Announcement of the Programme of his Lectures for the Winter Semester 1765-1766. e) Concerning the Ultimate Ground of the Differentiation of Directions in Space (1768). A scientific work in which Kant replaces his earlier, relational view of space with an absolutist conception. Adickes 14, 104; Warda 207, 237. Julian Wuerth, ed., The Cambridge Kantian Lexicon, 2021. Octavo (198 x 113 mm). Contemporary marbled paper over boards, spine with remnants of manuscript label. Illegible embossed stamp at head of title page. Light rubbing, minor browning to endpapers, several ink splashes to edges and content margins: a very good copy.…
